About Us

Ben Burgess

I started climbing in 2014, while living in Winston. Funnily enough, I was raised in Boulder, one of America's biggest climbing cities, but never climbed there. I fell in love with the quartzite cliffs of Pilot Mountain and Moore's Wall, and found even more adventures hiding a couple hours away in the Blue Ridge. All the climbing destinations in NC feel treasured and taken care of by a tight-knit climbing community. I loved seeing people come together over climbing, both indoors and out. That's why I founded Rock Box Bouldering. Climbing gyms provide a place for people to learn climbing, train for the outdoors, and make those bonds. I look forward to making that happen in Winston-Salem.

Annie is an NC native and self-proclaimed "pokey." She has climbed off and on her entire life, but has considered it more of a SERIOUS BUSINESS over the last eight years. She loves multi-pitch trad, yelling at things she can't climb (YET.), and making incomprehensible memes. She'll be starting a PhD program at Chapel Hill in the Fall, but will still be around to help with social media/marketing/BOTHERBOTHERBOTHERing Ben as much as possible.

I got my start in climbing at The Edge at UNCG in 2013. Everyday, after class, I would go straight to the climbing wall & would just spend hours there, trying to come up with something new. In 2015, I became a routesetter there, which led me to start setting at some other nearby gyms, then eventually to Rock Box.

I grew up near Atlanta, GA, but missed out on the gym & outdoor climbing scene there. I have been to gyms in & out of the country, including Japan, but my current outdoor bouldering resume consists of only NC locations, which I hope to expand that in the future.
